Join us on Thursday, June 27th to discuss Chapter 3 “Understanding Inequities: The Role of Schemas” from An Inclusive Academy: Achieving Diversity and Excellence by Abigail J. Stewart and Virginia Valian. This event is hosted by the IDSTEM Reading Group and will be led this week by Ramina & Nicolette. We welcome all who are interested in gender/race equity & discussing this book chapter.
This informal event will run from 3:30pm - 5:00pm in WIRB Lunchroom 4190.
Chapter 3 introduces the idea that people believe advancement should be based only on merit and that the social group one belongs to does not play a role in this evaluation – the chapter argues that this has never been the case. The authors agree that advancement should be based on excellence but discuss compelling data showing that someone’s social group does play a role, overall, whether people think it does or not. We are excited to discuss this chapter with the group as this is a comment we have heard over and over again when pushing for diversity & inclusion in STEM.
