Reading Group: Chapter 1 from An Inclusive Academy: Achieving Diversity and Excellence

  • WIRB 4190 (Lunchroom) Western Interdisciplinary Research Building London Canada (map)

Welcome to our inaugural reading group session, in collaboration with the Western Women in Neuroscience group and led by Dr. Jessica Grahn and Dr. Bjorn Herrmann from the Brain and Mind Institute at Western University. Individuals from all faculties and levels are welcome.

We will be reading and discussing An Inclusive Academy: Achieving Diversity and Excellence by Abigail Stewart and Virginia Valian over the summer.

Background on this book:
The precursor to this book (Why So Slow?, 1997) has served for decades as an evidence-based bible on the roots of bias in academia as well as interventions to mitigate the effects of that bias. The current version has been updated, and at least half of the book recounts evidence for best practices and recommendations. With the focus on diversity becoming more prominent in academic life (in practice as well as on paper), and the recent announcement of the Dimensions diversity awards for post-secondary institutions (, we think this is timely.
